How
To Fight Back & Win :: The Joy Of Self
Defense
by Judith Fein
Former
military intelligence officer Fein has a black belt
in tae kwan do. She brings her own self-defense
program to readers through step-by-step lessons
illustrated by photos that demonstrate stances and
moves. She covers the basics of physical self-defense
and of preventing rape and sexual assault, escaping
from multiple assailants, and defending against armed
attackers. As important as the physical techniques,
she says, are the psychological elements involved (as
in both fear of fighting and successfully fighting),
the legal aspects of self-defense, preventing
domestic violence, being protected at home and on the
road, and the other skills women need to be
streetwise. Key to her whole presentation is seeing
self-defense skills as survival skills and that
self-defense begins with self-esteem.
How
to Prevail in Hostile Environments
by Xavier Maniguet
Surviving
diving accidents, shipwrecks, desert hikes,
avalanches, jungle travel, and other hazards is
possible, according to Maniguet, who offers a large
body of supporting advice, factual evidence, and
true-adventure tales. Lists of myths precede his
facts and amazing survival stories. He offers charts
that delineate types of vaccines, medicines, snow,
sharks, and snakes. His blend of anecdotes and how-to
makes this a fascinating book for the armchair
traveler as well as an essential guide for the daring
one, whether camper or polar explorer.
In
The Gravest Extreme :: Role Of The Firearm
by Massad Ayoob
Ayoob
offers something rare, common sense. The book is not
the usual testosterone overdosed rant about how to
kill the bad guys it is a realistic view of how to
avoid trouble and how to deal with trouble if it can
not be avoided by a respected and seasoned police
officer and educator.
Knife
Self-Defense for Combat
by Michael Echanis
Like
his stick fighting book, this is an excellent read as
well. The techniques shown are brutally effective and
easy to learn.Had this not been the case, Mr.Echanis
would have never been selected to train hand-tohand
instructors for the Special Ops.

by Kathy Long

world champion kickboxer Kathy Long shows women how

a living, No! No! No! helps women become aware of
potentially dangerous situations and equips them with
skills to fight back.
Paintball!
Strategies & Tactics
by Peter Wrenn
Stalk
& Kill
by Adrian Gilbert
Military
insiders would do well to eyeball this stalwart
survey of an important yet understudied martial art.
British historian Gilbert (Sniper: The World of
Combat Sniping, 1995) begins with the American
Revolution, works his way through major and minor
wars, and concludes by pondering the role of snipers
in present-day Bosnia. He writes, for example, of the
Kentucky long rifle, which with its longer barrel and
smaller bore became the best hunting weapon of its
time (with a marksmanship potential highly prized by
a nation of hardy, dead-eye hunters). British
regulars, on the other hand, burdened with their
inaccurate ``Brown Bess'' muskets, suffered heavily
from canny, mobile American sharpshooters; Gilbert
opines that the gap separating war and hunting can at
times be a small one.
Survial

by Leroy Thompson
From
the combat-tested, slash-and-thrust blade to me

book shows you which type of blade suits your need
best. For the man who really uses his knife, it
covers utility blades, hollow-handled survival
knives, survival kits, folders, combat and
streetfighting knives and knife specs and
evaluations.

book is one of Koehler's best. It contains the most
effective methods for training dogs in the three

with easily understood explainations and pictures.
The
Truth About Self Protection
by Massad Ayoob
Ayoob's
dynamic, no nonsense writing style "grabs"
the reader right from the start and doesn't let go.
This book in particular covers the full spectrum of
considerations regarding so many aspects of
self-protection. He covers the pros and cons of
various methods of defense with sound advise leaving
the reader with "options" so that you can
choose what works best for your situation.

Boston
On Guns & Courage
by Boston Party
Boston's
on Guns and courage is well written. Many quotations
from John Ross' book Unintended Consequences, as well
as from patriots going back to the revolution of
1776, frame a nice discussion of the authors thesis,
namely that the second amendment is the final
guardian of the rest of the constitution.
Brassey's
Essential Guide To Military Small Arms
by Derek Allsop
As a
broad treatise on small arms design this volume
generally succeeds. It does not include every
possible design, but has good coverage of the
important ones. Since the main contributors are Czech
it's particularly strong on East bloc designs
including a few obscure ones, which is an interesting
contrast with most Western writings.

those new to the shooting sports. The basics of
firearms handling and shooting safety, as well as
clothing and gear, are discussed in detail. There is
also excellent advice relating to types of rifles and
shotguns, how to find the proper fit, and purchasing
them. Shooting stances and techniques are described

NUCLEAR |
America's
Achilles Heel :: Nuclear, Biological &
Chemical Terrorism
by Richard Falkenrath
It is
far too easy to find shocking explanations of the
biological weapons potential that do not describe
some of the difficulties in their procurement and
delivery. This "sexy" approach captures our
attention and makes for good entertainment, but the
'Chicken Little' approach doesn't help us develop
rational methods for dealing with the issue.

Nuclear
War Survival Skills
by Cresson Kearney
There
are a number of do-it-yourself guides to civil
defense available, but most seem to be aimed at
hard-core survivalists who have crack outdoor skills,
and lots of specialized equipment. This book is very
different and is written for the average citizen by a
former U.S. Army officer, field geologist and civil
engineer who built and field-tested the
"expedient" shelters described within while
still employed at the U.S. Department of Energy's Oak
Ridge National Laboratory.
Nuclear
War Survival Skills :: What You & Your
Family Can Do
by Cresson Kearney
How to
put it plainly, this book is an ABSOLUTELY MUST HAVE
for anyone even remotely interested in empowering
themselves in a Nuclear War. Though the book itself
is a little out of date the facts it contains are
emmensly important to know. It addresses myths &
facts of Nuclear war, radiation, etc. You'd be
surprised how well off you can actually be if you
know what to do.

SPECIAL WEAPONS |
Advanced
Bowhunting Guide
by Roger Maynard
America's
Special Forces :: Weapons, Missions,
Training
by David Bohrer
Bohrer
offers a timely look at these elite troops. The first
five chapters provide an in-depth look at each of the
military services' special operations, including a
short history of the unit, qualifications to begin
the rigorous training program, the actual training
program, how the units are organized, the equipment
and weapons used, and potential missions. The final
chapter offers a short essay on their future.
Although each service is examined in detail, almost
half the book is dedicated to the Army's Green Berets
and Rangers, who make up the majority of the
special-operations forces. The book is lavishly
illustrated with color photographs that enhance the
well-written, easy-to-understand text. This book will
have appeal to teens because of the on-going war
against terrorism. It should be noted, however, that
it was written prior to the war in Afghanistan.
Hence, there is no information on current operations.
Basic
Stick Fighting For Combat
by Michael Echanis
This
book was one of the first of the post-Vietnam era
"military martial arts" books. It is the
third (and last) in a proposed series of nine books
presenting Echanis' Special Forces applications of
Hwarangdo. The author died while the book was in
production, and it shows. The text is not nearly so
detailed as in his first two books, and two sections
were photographed using other people (one with his
instructor, one with one of his training partners).
Still, this book sports some excellent combat
applications using various lengths of sticks. As in
most Ohara books, the photos are of good quality.
While many books have dealt with the topic of stick
fighting in greater depth since this one was
published, this book is a fine addition to the
library of anyone who is interested in martial arts
for combat.

clearly explained makes this book a valuble addition

Knifemaking
:: A Complete Guide To Crafting Knives, Handles &
Sheaths
by Bo Bergman
If
you're a blacksmith looking for tips on making knife
blades, there's not a lot here for you. Sorry. But if
you'd like to make a knife without building a forge
or buying a stock-removal system, you're in the right
place. This book was originally written for the
Scandinavian market, and then translated into
English. The people of Sweden, Norway and Finland
often buy an inexpensive (locally made) knife blade,
then assemble the handle from wood, or birch bark,
antlers, brass spacers, etc...and make a leather
and/or wooden sheath for themselves. They wind up
with a 'custom' knife for the low price of a blade,
their time, and a few natural materials they gather
on the spot. This is a tradition in their part of the
world, and this book shows how to do it, and do it
very well. It has clearly translated instructions,
good illustrations, it's well worth the asking price.
